Project Overview

The Kuunika Project: Data for Action is a 4-year program funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and implemented through the Government of Malawi (GOM) and partners.  It aims to establish a strong base of high-quality, routinely-available data and an ingrained culture of data use among technicians and policy makers in the health sector, using HIV as a first use case.

The schematic below outlines the various electronic systems operational in Malawi.  Few links exist and most data production, reporting, and access still happen using paper systems (not pictured).

What are the ultimate outputs and outcomes Kuunika seeks to improve with better data systems and a culture of data use?

Below are our 9 project goals.  1-6 focus on helping Malawi achieve HIV epidemic control through scale-up of combination prevention and strengthening the treatment cascade.  Goals 7-9 focus on increasing performance and efficiency in the system to accelerate progress on health outcomes making best use of limited resources.   Specific metrics for each goal have been specified in the results framework.
